I was aware that there was a "local" member but, as you might imagine, she is not keen to speak to me. This is a problem with all our representatives as I think they have to sign up to "confidentiality" before they become members. Rest assured I will be lobbying for more open stewardship and public accountability.

According the Police Authority website Ruth Joyce lives in Linton, Cambridgeshire. It has been reported today that Linton may be losing its police station.

Councillors in Linton have accused Cambridgeshire Police Authority of acting "under a veil of secrecy" after they read of the plans in the News.

As I mentioned above I believe the Police Authority website is inaccurate, as there is evidence (1,2) Ruth Joyce lives in Withersfield, Suffolk.

On Tuesday the 11th of November 2008 Douglas Carswell the Conservative MP for Harwich sought and obtained permission to bring in a a bill aimed at abolishing police authorities and replacing them with democratically elected police commissioners. He is suggesting strengthening the link between the public and the police. He stated Chief Constables are more accountable to Home Office target setters than local people. He described Police Authorities as quangos of local worthies and said few people know that Police Authorities exist, fewer know who sit on them.

That is hardly surprising if members of Police Authorities treat enquiries from the public in the manner Ruth Joyce has in my above correspondence.

Sir Patrick Cormack MP dismissed Mr Carswell's proposals as "populist claptrap".
