As I understand it CityLife want to move what goes on there to the CRC site on Kings Hedges Road.

I agree there is very little easily accessible space in Cambridge for community groups; but there is loads that public money gets spent on - there is a lack of openness about arrangements for hire/access.

With regard to the Howard Mallett Centre, you say "[it] would be no loss at all if it was demolished."

I think you might find that the various non-profit and community groups who have been using it over the last few years might disagree with you. It's a useful building in a city where it's increasingly difficult to find flexible and cheap space for these kinds of activities. Please don't repeat the ridiculous idea that making the park next to it very slightly bigger would be an improvement.

Another article in which I've also commented on the effects of these taxes on new homes, and development more generally, is at:

I'm inclined to agree with Andy Bowers on this one. I only have limited data on this, but from personal experience, living on a development with a s106 fund, a portion of the money seems to have been allocated to projects with only tenuous connection to residents' needs and it is unclear at this stage what specific development needs are being addressed. I think we need a broader view and the provision of open/green space, particularly in areas where residential density are very high, would seem the way to go.

Another problem that I have with the current open space policy is the "intensification" it results in. Cambridge is fortunate to have some relatively unstructured open space (bordering on the wild) and there is a real danger that spending 3.75M "enhancing" it will have the very opposite effect in the eyes of many.

Coleridge City Council candidate Conservative Andrew Bower has responded via Twitter to say:

@RTaylorUK Yes, we've been campaigning on this for years - weak local plan made worse by too much dependence on commuted payments

Labour Candidate for Abbey, George Owers, has also tweeted a response saying:

@RTaylorUK We should get tough on developers, forcing them to provide new green spaces on developments. Improving existing spaces not enough
