It appears the email sent to me by Mr Preston was in fact him distributing a council press release:

I called the council on the number given and they told me there is space available and I can attend. The person I spoke to said she thought it was open to all but wasn't sure.

Can we believe this scheme for chopping down trees on Jesus Green is up again? Diana Oviatt Hamm and her wall chart of tree felling ' to effect uniformity' whatever that means, was stimyed last year by Councillors. SHe intended to yes, chop down the different trees along park Parade, planted only 20 years ago, to replace them. And to replace the avenue of trees across Jesus Green

She has had £500 from the Electricity and Beer mistake of damaging unto death a plane tree, for three years but no replacement plane tree has been yet planted.

This is an absurd waste of public money and a dereliction of duty in the failure to replace a tree already paid for. Jesus Green does not need tree felling of healthy pleasant varied trees.

I would like to moot a vote of No Confidence in Oviatt Ham who is a real wild card , as you say, unaccountable and prone to secrecy. She is a real threat to trees rather than their protector and she sets herself against the views of the world expert Professor Oliver Rachham who has told us that the plane trees on Jesus Green will last for another 150 years.

This afternoon I received the following:

<blockquote>
From: "John Preston" <John.Preston@cambridge.gov.uk>
Date: 29 June 2010 16:26:39 GMT+01:00
To: Richard Taylor
Subject: Jesus Green and Midsummer Common

Dear Mr Taylor

The City Council is seeking residents' views on options for the proposed planting of new trees on Midsummer Common and Jesus Green. The project is part of the Council’s goal to maintain and enhance the public open spaces within the city and to ensure that its tree management programme is undertaken in a sensitive manner.

The council has allocated approximately £50,000 for the scheme.

The first stage of the consultation process is a workshop seminar being held on Thursday 1st July at 5pm, at the Wesley Church, King Street. Stakeholders have been invited to discuss possible ideas, which will then be worked up into draft proposals for full public consultation.

This will take place during the summer, prior to a decision being taken on the planting strategy at the West Central Area Committee in the early Autumn. This timescale will enable the new trees to be planted in the 2010-11 planting season.

If you wish to attend the seminar, please ring Cambridge 458644

regards

John Preston
Historic Environment Manager
Cambridge City Council
