John,

I don't take a simple view against enforcement. I merely say it ought be a last resort; as by its nature it is inconsistent and expensive.

I have called for enforcement where East Area councillors have asked for it; I've spoken at the East Area committee asking what they've done in response to councillor set priorities.

I've also lobbied for action against speeding to be targeted at the times of the day where the statistics show it is needed and the roads are still busy with cyclists and pedestrians - 23.00 - 0200 or so on Fridays and Saturdays.

With respect to 20mph zones I am even more wary of excessive enforcement. I have expanded on this at:

Robert, you have my sympathy for your situation. Here in central Cambridge there is a distinct lack of traffic policing. Richard your simple view against enforcement doesn't work in the case of a main road that gets congested during the day, resulting in low speeds but with light traffic endures some very high speeds, as the road is clear. Speed cameras would be effective. You only have to observe traffic speeding down Victoria Avenue then slamming on their brakes as they approach the speed camera. It is very common. A long straight road results in high speeds. I just don't think that you can traffic calm Victoria Avenue for aesthetic reasons, and it being a major river crossing route into the city.

I live in Ramsey Mereside, Cambridgeshire, I've written nearly 500 letters about the speed through our village, we have a report by Cambs County Council which was backed by the ombudsman which states that until someone is killed then we will see no measures implemented. Our village purchased it's own speedgun, the fastest recorded speed through our village was 98mph

We've reported the best times for the police (5am till 9am) and (16.30 till 18.00) and (22.45 till 23.30) but they turn up at 11am stay for an hour and go home, many checks are carried out at weekends when it's quiet. For three weeks I've reported a 40 tonne lorry exceeding 55mph at 23.00, not once have they been out to catch him. Our homes shake when the lorries race through at this speed

Travelling to work in a morning, I go through a village called Kings Ripton, they have a narrowing at either end of the village to slow down vehicles, motorists ignore the right of way signs, this is how ignorant we have become today

The County and Local Council dont care about the problem, the police are not interested

The only way this issue would be solved is to heavily punish them, large fines, 6 points and if that doesn't work then prison for 6 months

The speed monitoring is carried out by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Road Safety Partnership . As this is an organisation formed by more than one public body it is not itself subject to the Freedom of Information Act (a loophole I would like to see closed).
